Mirror Mirror
Mirror Mirror

One of my students asked me recently about the application of mirrors as she was moving house.
On this occasion I decided to make a some research about the history of using mirrors  in Feng Shui.
Herewith some ideas I have found without completing a full research .

As we consider the use of mirrors in Feng Shui we need to have our discerning ability to see if application of an object in the space makes common sense or follows logic at all.

We all are aware of the fact that Feng Shui is not a belief system. In Classical Feng Shui observations are made historically based on astronomical, cosmic geocentric facts  which rooted in physics and mathematics.

In traditional Classical Feng Shui we cannot find reference about using mirrors as we  do now in our modern interior design.

To examine this, a relevant question could be asked: Can a mirror or a door terminate or stop Chi?

What is Chi? This is the ultimate question.
Chi is (in) all imaginable, touchable and theoritical phenomenon. All imaginable phenomena have life energy (Chi) in them.

Mirrors will reflect light and images.
According to Feng Shui teachings however, light is not Chi, light is only part of Chi. In other words, any mirrored object is not the same as its Chi.
A door cannot terminate Chi. A closed door still lets some Chi in, although it may block out certain qualities of Chi (E.g. wind, temperature and sound to mention just a few).

However, when we study Classical Chinese Feng Shui we must use our intelligence to understand whether a concept follows logic or common sense.

Grand Master Chan taught us similarly not to contradict flying stars constellation of a house  with placement of objects /e.g. mirror/ in the wrong place.

The example of a Ba Gua mirror  hanging outside of a house entrance is well known. Let us imagine that the occupants of the house have the intention to ward off bad influence from an ugly object from the neighbouring block of flats. They wish to send the Sha Chi back to its origin.
With our present knowledge of the Laws of Chi movements in space our logic advises us that the Ba Gua mirror can invite Sha Chi into the house rather than sending it back to its origin.

Ancient Chinese mirrors were used, not so much for their reflecting powers, but were made from metal and their usage was to add metal to the space.

Therefore, you will not find any references concerning to mirrors in any of the ancient Chinese Feng Shui Classics.

The impact of the environmental Chi of the location together with a number of other factors like climatic conditions, seasonal changes, architectural features will have an overwhelming power over a few inches the mirror space occupies.

Although mirrors were not part of Classical Feng Shui remedies we use them in our modern interior design as they became popular.

In Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Singapore they are widely spread to decorate the inner space together with crystals and statuettes.

According to the belief of the Black Hat Sect these objects can bring the WU XING into effect /five  transformations./

In the Western  world we may use mirrors to bring the following qualities into our space

  • enlarge a small space
  • promote positive thinking
  • attract wealth
  • reflect the image of beautiful natural environment
  • reflect Chi to create feeling of spaciousness

Be careful though not to use mirrors in bedrooms. It is not considered auspicious to sleep in line with a mirror.

Useful Feng Shui tips for buying a new home: Never place a mirror directly opposite the front door unless specifically advised by an expert. Also note that mirrors opposite each other will always cause conflict.

To sum up my research so far it is better to be cautious and use our common sense before we put up any mirror in a room as we cannot consider it a remedy but rather usage for psychological reasons.

We always remember that the main application of Feng Shui remedies is to attract Sheng Chi and to avoid Sha Chi.

It is debatable whether using mirrors can have those effects.
